Oral History of Tu-Han
Tu-Han is a 37-year-old Vietnamese American, born in Boston, shares her journey as a second-generation immigrant whose parents left Vietnam as teenagers to study in Japan before immigrating to the U.S. in the 1980s. Growing up as the only Asian person in a white Boston suburb, she experienced cultural bullying but developed resilience and fluency in Vietnamese through her parents' intentional efforts. Though primarily identifying as American, Tu-Han recently reconnected with the Vietnamese community through ICAN and is now committed to teaching her mixed-race children Vietnamese language and culture, while navigating the complexities of balancing American values with traditional Vietnamese expectations.
