Oral History of Alexander Nguyen

2nd Gen Oral History - Alexander

Alexander Nguyen, a 26-year-old second-generation Vietnamese American from East San Jose, shares his journey of navigating a complex ethnic identity. Growing up, he felt disconnected from his Vietnamese heritage and instead found greater acceptance within the Mexican community, but after his mother's passing, he made a deliberate effort to reconnect with his Vietnamese roots and learn about his father's Vietnam War experiences. Now a high school social studies teacher, Alexander reflects on his family's economic struggles and the microaggressions he faced as an Asian American, while planning his first visit to Vietnam this summer to further explore his heritage.
