Oral History of Thao Le

 

Thao Le was born in Fremont, California, to two Vietnamese refugee parents. She lived in Fremont until she was 18 years old, then relocated to San Jose, California. She is Vietnamese American activist who helped organize Bay Area's ViệtUnity South Bay, which focuses on anti-deportation. She also participates in bilingual tenant organizing and policy advocacy. She holds a bachelor's degree in Sociology from UC Santa Cruz. She has worked with a variety of nonprofit organizations since graduation, providing direct services as well as community organizing. She is currently a caregiver for her relative and is enrolled in Evergreen Valley College's Vietnamese Translation & Interpretation Program. She talks about her life in Fremont before coming to San Jose, her relationship with her family and community, and her Vietnamese-American identity. She discusses what it means to be a Vietnamese American activist, as well as the hardships that come with it. She addresses her identity, community, the Vietnamese language, and cultural problems.
