Oral History of Sydney Tran

 

Sydney Tran, a 22-year-old Vietnamese American, was interviewed about her upbringing, cultural identity, and experiences as a second-generation Vietnamese American. She grew up in San Jose, California, where she was surrounded by a large Vietnamese community. While she primarily spoke English at home, her parents spoke Vietnamese. Sydney identifies as Vietnamese American and feels a strong connection to her Vietnamese heritage, though she has struggled with language barriers and cultural differences at times. She describes her family's traditions and her parents' backgrounds, as well as the role of being Vietnamese in her social circles and any discrimination she has faced. Overall, Sydney's interview provides insight into the experiences of a second-generation Vietnamese American navigating her dual identity.
