Oral History of Nancy Ta

 

Nancy Ta, an 18-year-old Vietnamese American, describes her upbringing in San Jose, California and her experiences navigating her dual identity. She discusses how her parents emphasized maintaining Vietnamese language and traditions, while also adapting to American culture. Nancy reflects on the differences between her Vietnamese American upbringing and that of her friends, as well as the challenges of balancing her cultural identities. She shares how being part of the Vietnamese community at her workplace has helped solidify her sense of Vietnamese heritage, and how she has felt more disconnected from her Vietnamese identity during certain periods of her life. Overall, Nancy's story highlights the nuances of growing up as a second-generation Vietnamese American.
